I've taken them both and assuming the traffic on the 14 isn't bad (probably
no worse than the traffic on the 5 and 99), I'd go with your idea about it
being easier on the trailer and take the eastern route.  The Bakersfield
route would be pretty slow going up the mountain road with a trailer.

Subject: [ASM / Patrol Advisors] Route Preference

I just wanted input as to which route is preferred to get to Lake Isabella.
We can go through Bakersfield and Highway 178 from the west through the
windy river gorge or approach from the East north of Mojave on Highway 14.
Each route only varies by a few miles. The eastern route takes an extra 15
minutes per map quest.

 

Any opinions? The eastern route may be better for Tony and the trailer.
