[Camporee] Camporee meeting reminder

Pauline --

Glad that we had the brief opportunity to talk last night at the Roundtable about the upcoming Camporee. (So happy that you are on the road to recovery!!! Acting a doctor, my prescription: take better care of your self!! No, do not give up scouting -- if necessary, give up everything else!!)

I was able to speak to the OA about the proposed site for camporee this year. Christina Gables and Jeff Cohen had some good input about possible sites. You should make direct contact with them before you make a final location commitment, but in brief they have reservations (as you did, too) about the Santa Fe site, suggesting that Firestone Camp Ground might be a strong alternate to consider and research. I know that Christina [ (-: ] has already connected with this campsite and done a survey of the facilities and might have contacts to facilitate its consideration.

At the Roundtable, I announced the camporee effort and solicited information from all interested adults that might be willing to actively participate in the camporee planning and execution. This is the information that I got from my sign-up list:

	Lisa Alexander	email: liasalexandr at earthlink.net WK (310) 208-7723; HM (310) 313-4296

	Coleen Keyser	email: mrsmackeyser at mac.com Cell (310) 351-4416; HM (310) 876-9001

	Hope this helps.

	/ John Haight

On the ongoing saga of the camporee location.

I spoke to Schabarum Park again today.

The bad news is that they changed their minds once more -- they do not
have room for us this year on Apr 28-30.

The good news (spectacularly good) is that they felt sorry about their
end of the confusion and contacted Margarita Ramos at Santa Fe Dam
Recreation Area. She has agreed to host our Camporee on Apr 28-30 and
has invited me to go inspect their park (in Irwindale) on Friday to see
if it is sufficient for our purposes.

This is grand news.

Santa Fe Dam has is located in a 2500 acre basin, of which 836 acres are
set aside for park usage. It has a 70 acre lake (with areas marked for
swimming, canoes and paddle boats). There is a group campfire area in
an amphitheater, more hiking trails than they have yet mapped out and
each camping area comes with its own individual fire ring as well. If
we chose to have swim races and canoe races (for kids with the
appropriate merit badges) they will provide (for a fee) trained
lifeguards to help us police the water safety. They also have an area
where we can set up the rock climbing wall and indulge in our evil axe
throwing practices.

It is located near the intersection of the 210 and the 605 (about ten
minutes further up the pike than Schabarum), but sounds great.

Would anyone like to come with me on Thursday or Friday to walk the park
and drop off a deposit?

Just a reminder, the February camporee meeting is on February 1 (first
wednesday of the month). The meeting is at the westside service center
(scout store) and starts at 7PM. We'll be discussing scout events, so if
you have an idea and do not usually come to the camporee meetings, now's
your chance to come to the meeting and voice your idea.
