I got in late on this discussion.  As a software developer, I always think of the lowest common denominator.  If your document software does not support Palatino, it will use a default font instead (and that can be ugly).  So, don't be surprised if you see some letters coming out in different fonts. 
   
  It is also possible that there are some users that don't use Word - they should still be able to open these .dot files in their software.  There are ways to address this if it comes up.
