We had the opportunity to see these units first hand last night at our General
Meeting for SAR. These folks are here in SLC for the Outdoor Retailer Show this
weekend.
They are pretty innovative gadgets. They have a tracking function that you can
turn on and will send a tracking signal every 5 minutes continuous for 24 hours,
then you need to restart it, it has an "I'm OK" feature, to send a pre-packaged
message to an email address to let them know you are safe; a 911 type call the
goes to a central call center to call out the troops if need be.
You can send messages to an online account that can then be plotted by Lat and
Lon on Google Maps, or you can export the data and import into a program such as
Garmin Mapsource, or National Geographic Topo.
First impression is 'pretty cool'. A bit costly for the weekend camper, but for
someone miles from the nearest road with no cell phone service to be heard of,
the satellite service and coverage is really neat.
I'm interested to see how successful these work. If anyone get's an actual
rescue off one of these in the next year or so, you will need to give us some
details so we can see how it worked.
The cost is $9.99 per month if paid monthly or as Dave pointed out in his email,
$99.99 if paid yearly.Branden Loock
