[Eagleprojects] Eagle Project Originality

Hi all,

For the future it should be noted that on page 4 of the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook there is a section explicitly addressing the question of whether the project must be original:

"Originality

Does the leadership service project for Eagle have to be original, perhaps something you dream up that has never been done before? The answer: No, but it certainly could be. You may pick a project that has been done before, but you must accept responsibility for planning, directing, and following through to its successful completion."

The BSA does not care about originality; it cares about leadership and service. The hungry people who benefit from a food collection project do not care if others have been fed before. Unfortunately many of the needs in our society are recurrently the same, and each scout that leads one of these projects is experiencing for himself the value of organizing a group and helping others. Further, I do not think that our Troop wants to be in the position of imposing requirements that go beyond official scout literature; it sends a mixed message that we can ill afford at this time of difficult recruitment.

This being said, I do not have a problem with various leaders, parents, etc. in the Troop brainstorming to come up with additional project ideas as Bruce suggests. There may be various conservation projects, disability assistance, or building reconstructions out there that our scouts can do.

Peter

Hello folks,

I'm reluctant to give the go-ahead to Justin for next week. He was told
several months ago to get things ready in advance and not to cram the
approval process into one week. Additionally, we should start thinking of
some new project ideas since the collection concept has been overused in the
past couple of years. I'm not trying to stand in the way, but I did
explain these issues to Justin over two months ago.

Take care,
Bruce
