Emerald Bay Scout/Parent Information 2008
By this time all scouts have met with Erik and set up their camp schedules.
Below is a list of miscellaneous things to know for camp:
T-shirts: If your scout wants a camp t-shirt send $13-$15 with him for that purpose.
Money at camp: Some things "cost" at camp. For example, merit badges like leatherwork and basketry charge for material; scubasnorkel equipment rental is expensive (consider bringing your own, if you want to). Scouts may also buy incidentals (soap, toothpaste) and snacks at camp. Please bring money in an envelope with your scout's name on it to San Pedro. We recommend about $50-$75. Please send the cash in $5 bills. An Adult (Tony Bravo) will act as banker to ensure that money is doled out judiciously. No one will be allowed to buy $50 worth of Hershey bars!
Medical forms: If you havent mailed it to Lora Chen bring it to San Pedro. Your Scout will get on board the ship to Catalina ONLY if we have his completed medical forms!
Medical insurance card: We need a copy (front and back) of your Scouts medical insurance card. In the unlikely event that your Scout needs serious medical attention, this speeds the process considerably. Please include this photocopy with the medical forms.
Packing: From the Council website, please download the list of things to bring to camp. Mark all belongings with the Scouts name! Catalina Island gets hot during the day, but quite cool at night. DO NOT PACK YOUR THINGS IN A BACKPACK WITH A FRAME. Pack in a soft duffel bag. A smaller day pack is a good idea, to use on the boat and during some day hikes. Mark the Scouts name and phone number on everything. (Liquid paper or similar products or Dust tape work well on dark-colored items.) We will also provide luggage tags for troop ID, but tags sometimes fall off! If you bring hiking boots (theyre optional), pack them dont wear them on the boat!
Suggestions:
Bring at least one change of clothing for each day. Things get very dirty at camp.
Bring a towel or bath mat to use when changing. The tent floors are dirty.
Bring a flat sheet to put over mattress. The plastic is sticky when hot. The sheet lets you open your sleeping bag and use it as a sheet when the weather gets hot.
Bring a pair of aqua-socks or water shoes for the beach. Its rocky. Or for showers.
If you like to use fins, mask and /or snorkel bring them.
Anti-ant strategy: Bring empty, CLEAN metal cans. These cans filled with water and placed under feet of your bed, will help keep ants off you and your stuff.
Buy or borrow the merit badge books before camp and bring them. The camp store sells them, but they sometimes run out.
Parents send mail no later than Wednesday
mail service is slow!
Food: Scouts should eat lunch well before the ship leaves (around 2pm) and dinner may be as late as 7:00 or even 8:00 pm. So, please pack sandwiches, fruit, or anything else your Scout might like to eat during that time. This snack bag can go in the Scouts day pack, or he may simply carry it on board.
Medicines: If your Scout takes any medicine or uses medical equipment (inhaler), please give it to Erik before boarding the boat. Its important that your Scout gets his medicines and that no one else borrows them. We can arrange for medicines to be refrigerated if necessary. Please contact Erik about details.
Ahoy, mateys! All aboard the Catalina Express! Its located at the San Pedro terminal, Berth 95. Directions are available on the Council website. Be on time for check in! We will double check to be sure your medical forms are complete, and well collect moneyenvelopes for the Troop 113 Bank (Tony Bravo). The boat leaves at 2:00 pm and a lot of time is needed to load hundreds of scouts and their gear. DONNT BE LATE! Scouts will need to wear their Class A uniform and sneakers on board (required).
Remember: The FIRST and FOREMOST reason for this trip is for everyone to have fun! We will be following the Troop 113 Outing Guidelines. Boys who demonstrate that they cannot follow the guidelines will be disciplined, and may be sent home at parents expense. You were given these guidelines when you joined the troop. If you have questions, please contact Erik. He also sent you the Emerald Bay rules which must be signed and turned in to Erik.
Questions? Please call me at 310-204-0866 and I will get back to you ASAP.
