There needs to be MORE participation at Senior Activities, Troop Campouts, and in support of the Troop. Below is a breakdown of Senior participation since September 1, 2007: Only two Seniors have attended ANY camping trips with the Troop. They were Josh Plottel and David Libuser at the Cabrillo Youth Center in September. There was one major Senior outing to Knott's Scary Farm with Duncan, Joseph, Andrew Bravo, Tyler Golden, and Jackson in attendance. None of the other Seniors have participated in ANY camping or outings. The Seniors were requested to attend this months backpacking trip, but did not. Camping is a large part of the Scouting Program. Seniors are required to have at least one camping trip with or without the Troop or major outing each month. The Seniors as a Patrol have not attended any except for Knott's. Only 6 out of 18 or 33% of Senior Scouts attended the Court of Honor last month. William Jump, David Libuser, Alex Myers and Josh Plottel have assisted at one Troop Meeting. Gabe has assisted at two meetings. Some Seniors have not assisted at Troop Meetings when requested even though they were scheduled months in advance. The Seniors have not been represented at any of the monthly PLC Meetings. The only Senior that has had satisfactory attendance at Senior Meetings is Duncan with 67% followed by Joseph Bowman at 50%. Andrew Bravo and David Libuser have not attended any Senior Meetings. Seniors are expected to attend at least 75% of Senior Meetings and activities. Eli Reich, Greg Scarano, and Kenny Suliemanagich have not participated in ANY activities. Senior Participation needs to improve. Advancement for Senior Scouts and the Troop Program are being affected by the lack of participation. The Senior Program is run by the Senior Scouts. It is up to the Senior Scouts to decide what they want their activities to be. If there is not a major Senior activity planned each month, Seniors are expected to attend the Troop campout. I realize that you all have school activities and other activities that prevent you at times from participating. There needs to be a balance between Scouts and other activities. Scouts need the same commitment that a sports team expects. Scouts is not something to do when you have nothing better to do. Many Scouts take leaves of absence and communicate with me about their participation when things come up. I am open to ideas from Senior Scouts on how to improve participation and the Senior Program. There are activities that have been planned by Duncan, but they are poorly attended. I am thinking about eliminating the Senior Patrol in September of 2008 if participation does not improve. I have offered to take the Seniors kayaking in Newport as I have in years past. In September, I took Alex Myers, Gabe, and Eli kayaking there, though this was not an official activity. Upper Newport Bay, where I go, is a stunning wildlife preserve referred to as the ?Everglades of Southern California.? The Newport Aquatic Center rents the kayaks and gives a significant discount for scouts.
