Join Coastwalk, Surfrider, and many others on Wednesday, February 6th at the Coastal Commission meeting-oppose the proposed Foothill-South toll road that will run through San Onofre State Park. When: Wednesday, February 6th, 9 am Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds-at Wyland. Hall 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Del Mar, CA 92014 - Just off the I-5 in Del Mar at Via de la Valle exit. Directions here. Wear Your Coastwalk Tee-Shirt! Why Does Coastwalk Oppose the Proposed Foothill-South Toll Road? The proposed toll road renders unusable a significant portion (60%) of a popular, widely used state park. San Onofre State Beach is the fifth most visited state park in California. Its San Mateo Campground will be greatly impacted by the noise and pollution of toll road traffic, effectively making it no longer usable as a respite from city living, as now enjoyed by 120,000 visitors annually. Public access on trails from the campground to Trestles Beach would be impossible with the toll road in place. Construction of this road clearly would have an adverse effect on the ability of people to reach and responsibly enjoy the coast. The proposed toll road will adversely affect the watershed of one of Southern California's last pristine streams, San Mateo Creek, and the 11 listed species of plants and animals that live there. These public lands belong to the people of California. We have a responsibility to care for this land and to protect the array of flora and fauna it supports. This is a highly prized and irreplaceable commons that Coastwalk is pledged to protect. When considered from the viewpoint of being stewards of the coast (part of the Coastwalk vision), the grading, paving, and mechanization of this corridor does not represent the highest and best use of this land. Are seniors interested in going on March 15 (Saturday) instead? Also, we are supposed to have two-deep leadership so we need a second adult for either March 8 or March 15.
